Notice that I didn’t say they are vegetarian or vegan…because, although they do all contain vegetables, you will find other ingredients like butter, milk, cheese, or chicken broth (and, honestly, I don’t know all of the rules that go along with those types of diets).
These are just some of my favorite dinner recipes from right here on the blog that don’t contain meat. There’s chili, soup, pasta, burgers, burritos, tacos, and salad…something for everyone!
Speaking of Meatless Mondays, did you ever wonder how they came about?
It all started back during World War I when the US Food Administration asked Americans to cut back on their consumption of staple ingredients such as meat, sugar, wheat, and fat. Originally, it was Meatless Tuesdays (and there was even a Wheatless Wednesday).
The practice was continued during World War II and then subsequently faded out.
In recent years, going meatless for a day has been brought back and has become very popular with the focus now being on health and nutrition as well as animal welfare and the environment. And they changed it to Mondays…Meatless Monday does have a much better ring to it!
We do meatless meals at least once a week, and we really enjoy it. Not only does it change things up, we’re always amazed how delicious they can be, and it helps cut down on our grocery bill too!
